Orthodontics First Visit

What to Expect

The first step on your orthodontic journey is a courtesy one-hour consultation to identify your orthodontic needs and goals.

During your first visit, we can determine the short or long-term orthodontic needs for you or your child.

You will be greeted by our Dental Concierge who will get you acquainted with our office. Our New Patient Coordinator will then take a series of photographs and x-rays (panoramic and cephalometric) to facilitate an initial diagnosis or to establish a baseline for future treatment and growth. Our orthodontist, Dr. Johnson, will then perform a thorough orthodontic examination.

We will keep you informed every step of the way to make sure you understand all your treatment options. We have visual aids to show you what orthodontic appliances look like and how they work.

After the exam, we will decide one of three things:

  1. Treatment is needed now. There are dental issues that require immediate treatment to keep them from getting worse. Your orthodontic problems will be identified and explained as well as the possible treatments to correct the problems.
  2. Treatment is not needed at all. Your teeth and jaws are in proper functioning and aesthetic alignment. You don’t require any orthodontic treatment, just the six-month dental check-up and cleaning.
  3. Treatment is needed, but it can wait. There may be other dental problems and issues that need to be reconciled before starting proper orthodontic treatments. The most common reasons for delays are teeth growth and immaturity, and tooth eruption. Sometimes additional dental issues such as filling a cavity and performing a root canal will be done before orthodontic treatment is addressed.
