Teeth Crowding? Our Braces and Clear Aligners Can Help!

Tooth crowding is a common problem for patients who come to Woodhill Dental Specialties. We’ve seen patients with just a few teeth out of place and patients with teeth so crooked they were turned sideways. Severe crowding teeth can cause problems with eating, but it can also cause speech issues. Even mild crowding teeth can do this.

What’s the solution? Braces and clear aligners can straighten those crooked teeth. The more severe cases usually require braces, but milder cases can be fixed with clear aligners. Woodhill Dental Specialties repairs teeth crowding with our clear or metal braces or even lingual braces. What is best for you? We can help you figure that out during your free, no-obligation consultation. First, let’s find out what teeth crowding is and what we can do to help.

What Is Teeth Crowding?

Teeth crowding is just as it sounds. Your teeth are crowded together, which causes them to twist or come in behind or in front of your other teeth. There can be several reasons for teeth crowding. Often, baby teeth don’t come in at the correct time or fall out too soon, allowing other teeth to move into the space so that when the teeth do come in, they don’t have the room to do so correctly. Instead, they come in crooked. The same can happen with permanent teeth. Other factors can be bad habits like thumbsucking, physical issues like a small upper or lower jaw, or it could be genetics.

As we mentioned, teeth crowding can cause problems with eating and your digestive system. Digestion starts in the mouth with chewing and saliva. If food isn’t chewed properly, it’s harder to digest in the stomach and intestines. This could lead to indigestion, acid reflux, and other digestive issues. Repairing your crowded teeth could solve your digestive issues.

Crowded teeth can also cause speech impediments, such as lisps or trouble pronouncing sounds like ch, sh, l, and t. Your speech depends in part on where your tongue lands against your teeth. If your teeth are crooked, you won’t be able to correctly pronounce sounds.

These are some of the many reasons why it’s best to fix your crowded teeth.

How Do We Fix Crowded Teeth?

Woodhill Dental Specialties has several options for fixing your crowded teeth. While we can use clear aligners in some cases, we’ve found that braces are the best method for fixing severely crowded teeth. That’s why we offer three types of braces: metal braces, clear braces, and lingual braces.

Seeing is believing, right? We’ll do more than describe what we do; we’ll show you! Let’s take a look at three of our patients who experienced teeth crowding, and we’ll tell you what we did to bring them the smile of their dreams!

Teeth Crowding Patient No. 1: Before and After

AW came to us because she had crooked teeth. She had teeth crowding and bite misalignment, meaning that even her straight teeth didn’t line up properly. Ordinarily, her crowding level would require removing four permanent teeth, but neither she nor her parents wanted teeth removed. Because of this treatment took longer than normal (28 months compared to 18-24), but it was worth the wait.

AW’s molars weren’t completely in when we began, and she had a metal cap on one tooth. We removed the cap and moved the teeth, including the molars as they finished erupting. The end result was a full set of straight, beautiful teeth. We applied permanent retainers so her straight teeth will last her a lifetime.

Teeth Crowding Patient No. 2: Before and After

Patient CK came to us with gaps in her teeth. She also had a narrow maxilla (upper jaw) and an open bite. As it turned out, the gaps were caused because her upper canines were impacted, meaning they hadn’t dropped down yet.

We worked with her and her parents on a plan that would speed up the estimated 30 months of treatment she would need for her very complicated case. CK’s motivation meant she was willing to do everything we said to achieve the smile she wanted. We located her canines with 3D x-rays and got them to drop. From there, we corrected her bite and crowded teeth in only 22 months. Today, she proudly shows off her gap-free, beautiful smile!

Teeth Crowding Patient No. 3: Before and After

Patient EM was the youngest sibling in a family of youngsters that had braces treatment with us. She came to us with teeth crowding, a tendency to have an underbite, and small lateral incisors (the teeth next to the two front teeth). We treated her with braces and fixed her undersized teeth.

Patient EM wanted to have a straight, beautiful smile like her siblings. She knew it would take work on her part, particularly in wearing the elastic bands necessary to correct her bite. She wore them exactly as prescribed, and we were able to finish her estimated 24 months of treatment in just 14 months!
